Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena founded the International Mahabodhi Meditation Center in Leh, the joint capital of Ladakh, in 1986. It has since become an example of socially engaged Buddhism in the region, launching numerous humanitarian projects, events and initiatives. Its advocacy work includes providing educational opportunities and shelter for disadvantaged children, empowerment and literacy programs for women and other socially disadvantaged groups, health care for the sick and needy, and a care home for the elderly and destitute. MIMC's growing campus has become a hub for a multitude of socio-cultural and community programs in the region.

He is also the founder of the Mahakaruna Foundation, the Save the Himalayas Foundation and an advisor to the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB).

Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena was present during the session to welcome the doctors and hundreds of patients who had come to receive medical treatment: “Welcome to Mahabodhi Karuna Charity Hospital. Your health is our wealth, your vision is our mission, your happiness is our happiness! »

French The medical professionals of the 153 GH Army General Hospital, who volunteered their time and expertise, were: Lt. Col. Ankit, Medical Specialist; Major Ajay Yadav, specialist surgeon; Major Sagar Arora, radiologist; Major Parul, ENT surgeon; Captain Sujata, ophthalmologist; Captain Rashi, military doctor; Dr Pravin Kalvit, diabetologist; Dr. Shubada Kalvit, gynecologist and fertility specialist; Dr. Pradyna Kutte, gynecologist; Dr Sahithi Bellala, dental surgeon; and Dr. Shalini Kulkarni, military doctor.

“Many experienced nurses also participated, ensuring the camp ran smoothly and providing compassionate care to all participants,” MIMC added.

Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena expressed his deep gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and medical staff of the military hospital for their kind support and cooperation. “A hospital with Karuna “Compassion (without the sense of compassion) becomes a temple of the Buddha; a compassionate doctor becomes a Buddha of medicine,” he said. “There can be no greater service rendered to humanity than to relieve disease and suffering. »

In addition to integrating spiritual development and human and animal welfare, Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena and MIMC are also closely involved in peacebuilding and interfaith dialogue, environmental conservation and heritage promotion Buddhist and Himalayan culture through national and international festivals. Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena has traveled extensively to participate in international conferences, seminars and workshops to promote spiritual and cultural values, environmental awareness, non-violence and world peace, and to elevate the status of women in society, particularly those from disadvantaged communities.

In 2021, Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena led a team from MIMC on a humanitarian aid mission to the border regions of Ladakh, providing material aid against COVID-19 as well as much-needed emotional and spiritual support to local residents who lived in fear during the twin crises of the pandemic and the military clash on the border between Indian and Chinese troops. The same team also led a peace campaign in the conflict zone, calling on both nations not to resort to violence, but to resolve the clash through peaceful means.*
